Sea Witch Presents: Wet Hot SF Summer : COOL GHOULS, THE SHE'S, Flaural, Down and Outlaws, Big Big Love, Vela Eyes

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Cool Ghouls

Although their name is derived from some of George Clinton's Funkadelic stage banter, San Francisco quartet Cool Ghouls have more in common with classic garage and melodic, mid-'60s psychedelia. Former high school friends from a Bay Area suburb, the band consists of guitarists Pat McDonald and Ryan Wong, bassist Pat Thomas, and drummer Alex Fleshman, with McDonald, Wong, and Thomas all sharing lead vocal duties. Mixing the raw, primitive sound of acts like the Troggs and the Monks with the harmonies and sophistication of the Millennium, the group's first release was the six-track Alright Cassette in late 2012. They quickly gained admirers in San Francisco and beyond with local hero Tim Cohen (the Fresh & Onlys) jumping on board to both champion the band and produce their 2013 self-titled full-length. Working quickly, they returned a year later with 2014's A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye. For their third album, Cool Ghouls invited songwriter Kelley Stoltz to produce the sessions. Stoltz also played guitar with the group in the studio, as did pedal steel guitarist Tom Heyman. The album Animal Races was released by Empty Cellar in August 2016.

The She's

San Francisco's favorite all female garage rippers. Mixing reverb-drenched jangly guitars with sun-soaked harmonies reminiscent of 60’s pop and surf bands, along with a plethora of influences from more fuzzed-out contemporary artists, The She’s have crafted a sound replete with emotion and sound: sometimes happy-go-lucky, sometimes gloomy/melancholy, all around brilliant; a testament to the city they were born and raised in.

Flaural

Denver-based Quintet Flaural is a contemporary blend of new wave, shoegaze, and psych pop. The band consists of Singer and bassist Collin Johnson, Guitarist Noah Pfaff, Drummer Nick Berlin, Scott Storch, and Multi-instrumentalist Connor Birch. Formed in the early 2015, Flaural employs traditional rock instruments with a modern fare of abstract synth and guitar textures, driving 'kraut-y' drum grooves, and introspective lyrics and vocals.

Down and Outlaws

Rock and roll isn't a sound. It's not an attitude. It's a need, it's a fight, it's the saving grace in the wake of a broken heart or something lost. If you ask what Down and Outlaws sound like, someone might mention The Stooges, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, or Lynyrd Skynyrd. But at some level, such comparisons miss the point. Call these San Franciscans bluesy, rootsy, dirty; it doesn't really matter. Down and Outlaws are a rock and roll band, pure and simple. These days, when the definition of rock and roll is increasingly uncertain, the tight-knit quartet's energy, authenticity, and blistering live performances are impossible to ignore or forget. With strong collective songwriting, Kyle Luck's guitar work, Jon Carr and Chris Danzig's gut-busting rhythm section, and Peter Danzig's howling vocals, Down and Outlaws play because they've got no choice. Music has saved the D&O, and they hope to return the favor.

Big Big Love

Big Big Love is a rock band formed by four young friends from Mexico City's south area. The project is distinguished by their energetic live shows in addition to their epic and emotional compositions. They released their first EP in 2013 and in 2014 the band released two new singles ( "Family Flag" and "Tender Men") that led them to play important shows in Mexico City sharing stage with bands such as Beach Fossils and The Bright Light Social Hour. In 2016 they will be releasing their first LP called "Friendship", recorded, mixed and produced by them and mastered by Greg Calbi (Talking Heads, Tame Impala, St. Vincent, etc). The first single is called "Tibias" achieving more than 200,000 plays on Spotify.

Vela Eyes

Vela Eyes is a 5 piece from SF fusing elements of post punk, shoe gaze, psych rock, & pop. Being long time bay area locals, Vela Eyes consists of a bunch of old friends. Together they frequented SF's bars and venues, always seeking out good music and a place to cut a rug. The collective taste & collaborative writing process of the group creates a melting pot of many different genres, and decades of rock. The chemistry between the members is alight with a common passion for creating beautifully lush and energetic music.
