San Francisco’s largest and oldest German restaurant, Schroeder’s, celebrates Maifest, the traditional German celebration of the spring harvest, which also coincides with Schroeder's 123rd Anniversary. It is the Oktoberfest for the Spring! Schroeder’s celebrates Maifest the entire month of May with a special performance on Thursday, May 5 for the anniversary to the tunes of Polkalicious, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The historic restaurant will be decadently appointed with colorful handmade paper flowers - traditional Maifest decor - in five spring colors chosen to represent the different owners throughout Schroeder’s history including the Schroeder's, Knishe's, Malouf's, Filipchik's and now Jan Wiginton and Andy Chun. Historically, this celebration of pride for German heritage included gatherings around the Maipole. At Schroeder’s, the community will gather for delicious beer, food, music and beer hall games, including the favorite stein holding contests and dancing. Maibock will be flowing; for Maifest, Schroeder’s will be pouring seasonal German beers Andechser Festbier and Hofbrau Maibock alongside a special Bockwurst for the holiday.
