I first came across The Kooks whilst traveling through Byron Bay on Australia’s East Coast in the back of a Combi Van. Whilst shopping for surf wax, I noticed a compilation album called Coastal Chill 2007. As "chill" was perhaps the best way to describe our location, and the eclectic crowd that had gathered for the annual blues and roots festival Blues Fest, I bought a copy -- and literally "fell in love at the seaside"…with The Kooks.More

American post-punk band, Mission of Burma, who formed in Boston in 1979, is bringing tears of nostalgia back to the eyes of the 80s punk revolution. Rebellious, unconventional and powerful, the re-mastered sound of albums, Vs, Signals, Calls and Marche, and live album The Horrible Truth About Burma, easily the best of their Ace of Hearts Catalogue, are finally being re-released by Matador Records.More

Accents aside, there is definitely a certain "euro-trash" element to this album -- and I mean that as a compliment. As only the Europeans can do successfully, this French trio’s wit and irreverence is an obvious drawcard even amongst the cryptic lyrics and 80s-inspired pop instrumentals.More

The Mountain Goats have come a long way since the days when they covered Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Lead vocalist and songwriter, John Darnielle says it himself in the album’s second song "San Bernadino". Heretic Pride, the band’s 11th full-length recording since 1994, is like a kaleidoscope.More

When initially loading Black Spade’s not-yet-released album To Serve with Love, I almost turned it off after the twisted intro. Not wishing to judge too quickly, I kept listening and I’m glad I did.More
Twisted, Bent & Confused…in a Good Way

Kapakahi formed two years ago in the Mission District of San Francisco. And as one band member noted, "you can hear a lot of SF in our playing. The music scene in San Francisco really lets new and different music thrive. We are also doing a lot more hip hop, which is huge in the Bay Area. I really think that SF is one of the only places that you could find the mixture of musicians and attitudes that it takes to make Kapakahi a successful band."More

Please forget the hype and just listen to the music -- this is what Geoff Travis and Jeanette Lee from Rough Traders said of The Libertines recently released "best of" album. Truer words have not been spoken. If you push Pete Doherty’s drug-induced, modelizing antics and media faux pas to the very back of your memory, the guy who looks like he has used up all of his nine lives puts on a stellar performance as Libertine front-man and proves that good British punk has a future.More

Have you ever listened to a vinyl spinning and then turned it off mid cycle? The sound gets slower and slower and, eventually, the record stops. When listening to White Magic’s second track “Very Late” featured on their new EP Dark Stars, this is what it sounded like. I felt like someone needed to turn up the tempo -- maybe it would have sounded better on fast forward. Particularly when esteemed crooner Mira Billotte’s somewhat screechy vocals and clever song writing seem to have more potential than the song allows.More

Call him what you will -- musician, advocate, educator, guru, family man -- John Butler and the rest of his Trio are taking the roots music genre to a whole new level. Touted as revolutionary in effortlessly blending blues, jazz, rock, reggae and soul, John Butler spoke to SF Station about his US tour and what he’d like the fans to take away from each concert.More
