San Francisco Chamber Music Society: Phillip Glass + Beethoven

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at The Emerald Tablet (see times)
The Emerald Tablet is thrilled to present the Chamber Music Society of San Francisco on Sunday, November 17th at 3pm.

The program opens with Philip Glass’ String Quartet no. 3 “Mishima,” and finishes with Beethoven’s ravishing opus 131 String Quartet in C# minor, a continuation of the Chamber Music Society’s exploration of the late quartets.

Featuring:
Jory Fankuchen, violin
Natasha Makhijani, violin
Clio Tilton, viola,
Samsun van Loon, cello

Here’s some background on the program:

The music for Philip Glass’ third string quartet ”Mishima” originated as his scoring for Paul Schrader’s 1984 film”Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.” The film tells the story of the tortured Japanese author Yukio Mishima, who in 1970 performed the act of Seppuku (a ritual samurai suicide of self-disembowelment). The music is hauntingly beautiful, and paints a vast and undulating landscape. It is one of the best examples of Glass’ mastery of minimalism. Don’t worry, there won’t be any samurai slicing at the concert.

Beethoven’s opus 131 String Quartet is the second to last work that he wrote, and was his favorite of the late quartets. It is a massive seven movement work, written to flow seamlessly from beginning to end with out pause (we’ll do a stretch before digging in, and suggest you do the same). Like so may of Beethoven’s masterpieces, 131 left even the greatest of the next generation of composers at a loss as to how to follow such perfection. Robert Schumann described the late quartets as “the grandeur of which no words can express. They seem to me to stand…on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination.” Of 131 in particular, legend has it that Franz Schubert said: “After this, what is left for us to write?” There is ever so much that can be said, but we will save it for the concerts.

2:30 pm doors, 3 pm music.
$10-20 suggested donation. Nobody turned away for lack of funds
Delicious complimentary snacks. Drinks by donation.
