REVIEWS:

I found Marcus books to be the most enlightened, real, and progressive book store that the bay area has seen. It is family owned, the atmosphere is rad, and they have incredible books!

I have been a fan of Marcus books foryears and love it. Karen and Temiko as well as the lively cast of characters that come in and out of the bookstore are both entertaining and enlightening. Great location and a great selection. Karen and Temiko provide a wealth of knowledge about the works they carry. I would venture to say it is worth a trip inside.

A bookstore for African American literature and writing.  I was killing some time so I walked in, not knowing what I would find.  Inside I found lots of great books, and was greeted by the cutest littel Dachshund who gave me kisses just for walking in.  I love a store with a resident cute pet.  I came out with a paper back mystery...it looks silly, but will be good on a plane ride.
I will have to go back for some more dog kisses and another book.

This place is absolutely wonderful. I walk by here almost every day and I've always wondered what was inside this cute purple bookstore. So today I finally had a chance to go in, and I was instantly amazed by it. I'm a black studies major at CCSF and come to find out, here was a black studies bookstore! All either written by black authors, scholars, and activists and then also a great biography section. The owner is such a nice woman and she was curious as to what I was studying and my summer plans etc. She also gave me a a little bit of a discount.  Which is great in a time like this.  And very nice of her to be willing to do that! They have a great selection and now I definitely know where I'll be getting my books now :)

This store's slogan is "books by and about black people everywhere." And they certainly do fulfill that charge. Everything from fluffy genre fiction to scholarly writing can be found here. The selection is both wide and deep--not just one book by important authors, but a number of choices. The organization can be somewhat perplexing, but there at least there is signage, and the staff is helpful. Those sensitive to incense might not like it.
