Description

( ( (HOUSEPITALITY) ) ) goes HUGE once again as we present a weekend-worthy lineup on a Wednesday, with a true pioneer of dance music production, a house music legend, and a figurehead of the new generation of Chicago DJs, all in one night:

::JAY HAZE aka FUCKPONY | Berlin::
(TuningSpork | Contexterrior | BpitchControl | Get Physical)

::GENE HUNT (Hardmoon, Real Estate Records | Chicago)

::CZ BOOGIE (5 Mag | Chicago)

Backroom grooves by

::JOEL CONWAY (Housepitality, Bubble | SF)::

It's hard to describe how influential Jay Haze has been in the underground dance music world. He's been producing dance music since 1999 under more aliases (Fuckpony, Sub Version, The Architect) than we can count.

He's released music on a host of different and well-respected labels (Playhouse, Kitty-Yo, Cocoon, Get Physical, Soma, Karloff, Musik Krause, and Underline) and he runs a few more (TuningSpork, Futuredub, Contexterrior, Junion), and yet his influence on music and the music business in general has belied the usual DJ/producer/label owner role—he's been involved in philanthropic efforts that have raised money for tsunami victims, abandoned children in war-torn Congo, and have provided musical instruction to kids from impoverished nations, as well as pioneering in the field of music release with the Textone internet label, along with Berkeley professor Bjoern Hartmann.

So in other words, the guy isn't just a genius musician/producer who can play guitar, piano, cello, bass violin, flute, trumpet, bass guitar and sing... but he's also a bit of a hero.

He's also basically unparalleled behind the decks, which is the most important thing for this night.

Also on the lineup, a headliner in his own right (who has headlined for us before): Chicago's Gene Hunt. Gene is an acknowledged pioneer in Chicago’s amazingly crowded house music scene. He had produced enough jackin’ tracks by 1999 to already have released a greatest hits compilation, and his production has only increased since that time. We can’t wait to have Gene back… and bring some more straight Chicago shit on our deserving crowd.

CZ Boogie is opening the main room, and bringing her amazing talents as one of the new ambassadors of the Chicago scene. She’s also the publisher of house music’s only full time/full length magazine, aka 5 Magazine, and as such holds an enormous amount of clout in a traditionally male-driven world….which doesn’t really matter in this introduction because it’s her amazing and proven skills on the decks that matter to our dance floor… and she’s got those to spare! We’re happy to have her back. You should be too.

Finally, resident Joel Conway, one of the most trustworthy and consistent DJs ever to play in our groove lounge, will serenade our ears and our hearts with another funky, chuggy, amazing set. He’s always a treat.

Dig in… because WE GOT YOU.

Jay Haze

It’s difficult to summarize Jay Haze’s ten-year musical career, but in concentrated form: producer, DJ and record label owner. Whether working in the studio or behind the decks in the club, he is a pro at getting people to react. Jay left Philadelphia in the early 00s and is now based in Berlin, also home of his house/techno record labels TuningSpork and Contexterrior. He DJs several times per year in the city’s famed Watergate club, and also holds a quarterly residency at Fabric, London – in addition to his stops throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America.

Jay has also released tracks and remixes on literally dozens of other labels, often under a variety of pseudonyms, such as Fuckpony (for BPitch, Get Physical and Cocoon) and Sub Version (for Soul Jazz). Apart from his solo work, Jay has collaborated with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Samim, and has remixed numerous other artists such as DJ Hell & P. Diddy, Gui Boratto and even Yann Tiersen’s theme from Amelie, which became a crossover hit. Haze’s productions constantly find their way into the sets of top-tier DJs like Richie Hawtin and M.A.N.D.Y.

Starting with his debut full-length Love for a Strange World (Kitty-Yo, 2005) and continuing with Love & Beyond (TuningSpork, 2008), Jay stepped outside of dance music into other realms such as pop, hip-hop and dubstep. His adventurous mix compilation Fabric47 (2009) brought immense praise, and it also launched his new campaign DJs for DRC to help victims in the war-torn Congo: he donated all his money from the CD sales toward the charity Merlin, and having encouraged a number of other DJs to donate money from gigs, aims to travel to the Congo to shoot a documentary and raise awareness. Still active on the music front, of course, Jay has just released the second Fuckpony album and has been focusing on crafting new sounds for other vocalists.

Gene Hunt

On any given night in Chicago, it's more likely than not that Gene Hunt is somewhere, crouched over the decks and working his magic. One of the true representatives of Chicago House Music, Gene is one of the top artists to emerge from the city, with a career spanning back to the initial wave in the early 1980s. As a teenager, he played at many of the key touchstones of the first generation of House Music spots, including the Warehouse, The Playground and The Music Box; he's been best known in the last few years for a series of tracks made then with the legendary Ron Hardy.
As a producer, Gene Hunt's first EP was Living in a Land, released on Chicago's Trax Records and co-produced and shepherded by Armando Gallop. From an early age, Gene imprinted his stamp on his musical style with an alteration between soulful, vocal recordings and harder, rough tech-y tracks. (And sometimes both in the same release - see, for instance, "Twilight People" featuring Robert Owens on vocals). By 1999 he had more than enough releases on his belt for a "Greatest Hits" double LP (Gene Hunt Classics, Dust Traxx).
In the years following, Gene Hunt released some of his best records on labels including Dope Wax, Track Mode, Got Soul and Unified, and delivered a tour de force in 2011 when noted Dutch label Rush Hour released Gene Hunt Presents Chicago Dance Tracks, a collection of some sixteen unreleased records from the likes of Larry Heard & Marshall Jefferson, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Lil Louis and Ron Hardy. As a follow up, in early 2012 Gene released an original two track EP, May The Funk Be With You, also on Rush Hour, with a remix from Theo Parrish. (Bio by Terry Matthew via 5 Mag)
