"There is the distance we've come, and the distance we've yet to go; we are the point where these two lines meet." -- Robin Kandel

Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the seventh solo exhibition with Robin Kandel.

"The drawings began when everything else stopped. My pencil wandering the streets of old local maps and across scraps of earlier drawings." - Robin Kandel

It Was A Place Beyond Compare With A Magnetism Like No Other is a collection of drawings made with ordinary Ticonderoga #2 pencil on prepared panel and paper. Kandel uses this particular pencil due to its simplicity as a tool and for its oblique reference to childhood memories, a recurring subject in her work. Whereas Kandel's previous work recalled childhood road-trips or measured miles with numerous ruled and tallied pencil marks, she says the current drawings began with her pencil wandering the streets of old maps, tracing imaginary routes. This meandering pencil like then spilled across scraps of earlier drawings, and eventually made its way onto prepared panels and paper. Kandel says this body of work might be asking, "so where is this place and how do we get there?"
