ABOUT THE FILM
“Rise of the Giants” follows the growth of the largest pumpkin in the world, Napa CA grower Tim Matheson’s 2032-pounder that broke the world record in 2013, the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growing club, and even inmates who are growing at the Spanish Fork jail. “Rise of the Giants” delves into a unique hobby that attracts salts-of-the-earth committed to making people smile. Every year growers around the country raise Atlantic Giant pumpkins that can grow over to 50 pounds a day (that is not a typo) – so big that once the contest is over, growers hollow them out and hold a boat race at Sugar House Park, which is captured in the film.

The film, creatively funded through a Kickstarter campaign, is directed by Los Angeles area-based filmmaker Daria Matza and co-produced by her husband Mark Devendorf.

After losing her mom to cancer, Matza credits many of the local giant-pumpkin growers for bringing her renewed hope. “2013 was the worst year of my life, but it was also the year a big squash pulled me from the brink,” reads Matza’s blog, entitled “How Giant Pumpkins Rescued Me.” Read Matza’s blog post here http://goodmenproject.com/uncategorized/how-a-giant-pumpkin-rescued-me-kvc/
