Rirkrit Tiravanija is celebrated for installations that invite social engagement and are activated by viewers’ interactions. For two decades, Tiravanija has been regarded as one of the most important figures of Relational Aesthetics, a practice in which the audience is regarded as a community, and the artwork is experienced as a shared encounter. Tiravanija’s wide-ranging work critically connects the personal and social with the political—his long-term project "The Land" is a hybrid place for art, architecture, advocacy, and solidarity with local rice farmers in a village near Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The exhibition "A Special Curatorial Project with Rirkrit Tiravanija: The Way Things Go" is on view at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, February 13–June 21, 2015.
