San Jose's growing indie and punk scene is both prolific and polyamorous. Case in point: Rex Goliath. Featuring members of the Record Winter and Color, Rex Goliath already have a solid three-song EP, How Many Bullets? Unlike the atmospheric, echoing sounds of Color and the loopy, ramshackle rock of the Record Winter, Rex Goliath are stripped-down and pissed-off, producing a brand of garage-tinged punk rock that is explosive, politically charged, angry and foreboding. The trio craft a nuanced hardcore--something like Killing Joke meets Hot Snakes by way of Black Flag. They'll be playing with Joan & The Rivers and Bascom.
San Francisco-based trio Scraper plays a brand of psychedelic punk rock--taking queues from the likes of The Stooges, Agent Orange and The Ramones. Fuzzy, lo-fi riffs support the Jim Morrison-like howl of Scraper's frontman. On the group's self-titled debut LP, they project a happy, poppy energy, tempered by a sometimes-sinister undercurrent of cynicism. All of these elements come together to create a timeless and potent punk sound.
