Chez Papa, Beach Chalet, Café Riggio, Le Colonial
By Tracie Broom (Dec 10, 2004)
Our tireless research teams have checked out a number of established chefs in new digs, and new chefs in establishments we dig already. From the neighborhood bistro to an expense account fantasyland, here's a froth-free survey of what's up. More

There are no secrets behind esteemed Belden Place alley's newest tenant Erzulie. As you saunter into the intimate yet airy space, you'll feel welcomed by the two chefs who man the open kitchen much like it was their home. More

Fillmore Grill Warms Up the Neighborhood
By Gloria Tai (Dec 14, 2004)
Barely two months old, this spot already attracts the bustling after-work crowd and local clientele. The short, and very reasonably priced, menu displays a good balance of dishes with a spin on what could've been average fare. More

On a foggy summer night, in the quaint few blocks of upper Fillmore, there's no shortage of places to sip on cool cocktails, nosh on steaming plates of savories, and blow some serious cash. But great food, be it Italian, French, or Japanese, can certainly be had in this sophisticated neighborhood on a San Francisco dime. More

Fina Estampa's Peruvian Cuisine
By SFS Staff (Dec 14, 2004)
Though largely eluding the city's foodie radar, Fina Estampa has dished up generous - yes, huge - portions of central coast Peruvian cuisine for thirteen years. Huge portions because it continues to be family-run, Peruvian because that is from where the owner and head of the family had immigrated, central coast because like many Japanese-Peruvians, the Shinsato clan hails from that region. The regional influence is not lost on the menu, carrying an extensive seafood selection and idiosyncratically Japanese-Peruvian traces of ginger and soy sauce. More

Still Rather Delightful
By Nish Nadaraja (Dec 14, 2004)
To the surprise of many, Foreign Cinema not only survived the dot-com era but has actually, having shed some of its pretentiousness, thrived to become a staple of the Mission District nightlife scene. And the food's not so bad either. More

Delectable Fare with a Regional Flair
By Laurel Timms (Dec 14, 2004)
Food takes front and center at Frascati, and the dishes head chef Kerry Mechler and his worthy cooking assistants create are remarkably delicious and artful. The menu changes with the seasons, the choices ranging from baked polenta cakes with porcini mushrooms and crumbled blue cheese, to pan-seared muscovy duck breast with fingerling potatoes, Swiss chard and roasted shallots. Kerry has fun with his tasteful creations, and it shows in presentation and flavor pairings. More

A Meal of a Lifetime
By Amy Sherman (Dec 14, 2004)
One of the dishes that most amazed me was spinach cooked in butter with sel gris and "calotte de boeuf" (basically a piece of steak). But the spinach was ethereal and the beef was the most tender and flavorful I have ever had. When I asked the waiter about it he told me that the Snake River Ranch in Idaho breeds a cross of Wagyu and American black angus. More

With the recent demand in San Francisco for authentic Nuevo-Latino fare, many restaurants have opened their doors in the past couple of years in an attempt cater to this dining whim, yet few have met the challenge with the panache of Fresca. More

Fringale Offers a Posh Take on the Traditional Bistro
By Tracie Broom (Dec 14, 2004)
Most entree prices hover at the fifteen dollar mark. One of the best of these is the pork tenderloin confit with shredded cabbage, deeply browned apples, and caramelized onions. If you've read any Tom Robbins novels, you're familiar with the mantra, "Yum." This dish is the edible version. More
