Mediocre Food with a View
By Karen Solomon (Oct 2, 2004)
If a Ferry Building wanderer seeks a pleasant respite, they would be hard pressed to do better then MarketBar for opulence or people watching. A classic beige palate soothes the eyes, as do the simple lines of the soaring ceilings, simple, clean furniture design, and attentive, though at times too-familiar, service. When weather permits, the ample outdoor seating that stretches out into the center of it all is unparalleled. For a sit and a beverage, this spot will always be an excellent choice. More

The Search Continues
By Kate Leahy (Oct 9, 2004)
A few new restaurants under our belt, the kitchen crew at A16 has continued our after-hours eating adventures in San Francisco. Though the temptation runs deep to return to our current favorite Thai House (on Larkin at Geary), we have tried to give other eateries a chance and have come across some interesting finds. More

Understated Yucatecan Food in Noe Valley
By Marco Panella (Oct 15, 2004)
Those unfamiliar with Yucatecan cuisine may expect too much from Mi Lindo Yucatan. The atmosphere is pleasant, the service is friendly, and the food is underwhelming. Simple chicken broths, turkey dishes and plain tomato sauces are staples at the quiet Noe Valley restaurant. Fogheads and hipsters will feel equally at ease. More

Cuisine Grandmere
By Karen Solomon (Oct 21, 2004)
You’d better like pigs if you plan to enjoy the Left Bank’s Larkspur dining room. And not the realistic oinking farm animal, but the graphical portrayal of the portly fellow in classical 1920’s Parisian poster incarnation -- whimsical, cartoony, and carefree of his future form seared on your plate. Images of pigs, said to be good luck in rural France, dominate the dining room’s every wall -- giving imagery to the whimsy and luck that you, as diner, are about to experience. More

Miss Millie's - Down Home Delicious
By Amy Sherman (Oct 28, 2004)
Miss Millie's sounds like a place where you would find delicious homemade biscuits, macaroni and cheese and fried chicken. It is. But you'll also find inspired vegetarian entrees and unique brunch items. In a cozy space on 24th street just above Castro, Miss Millie's serves up American classics with Southern and Southwestern touches. Likewise the service combines all-American friendliness with Southern hospitality. More

They got game
By Amy Sherman (Oct 29, 2004)
What are life's greatest pleasures? Wine, food, chocolate and sex are, for a start. South of Market based SmartsCo entrepreneurs Jennifer Elias and Julie Tucker have produced four question and answer games based on these pleasures that are as much fun for the dilettante as the expert. Written by "passionate novices" the sets of cards with roughly 100 questions each, also serve as a tutorial for anyone wanting to learn the essentials on a given topic. More

Downtown Fancy
By Thor Elliott (Nov 11, 2004)
Should you find yourself downtown with a hankering for finery, here are three spots to give a whirl: Frisson for design-savvy glam and Litebrite flavors, Tonno Rosso for the bay view and rustic Northern Italian cooking, and Roy's for pork lumpia and homemade ginger ale sorbet floats. More

Caught Too Early
By SFS Staff (Nov 18, 2004)
Prime location on prime Market Street isn't for the shy of heart. For months of build-out and preening, Catch caught the Castro's eye and finally in late 2002 opened its doors to curious neighbors. Think of the welcoming porch trademark to North Beach's "Enrico's," but spiffed up with a Spanish tile roof, inviting in the bustling street energy trademark to the Castro. More
Restaurants
By Tracie Broom (Nov 18, 2004)
Way down along the wind-blown coastline of San Mateo County lay the makings for an exquisite day trip, weekend, or lifestyle: the Maverick's for collecting shells and watching surfers, the nurseries and roadside stands for fresh flowers and produce, Costanoa for retreats, the Moss Beach Distillery for Bloody Marys, Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero for beers, Half Moon Bay Brewery for calamari, Barbara's Fish Trap for fried clams, and Canada Cove for daydreaming of owning a little trailer by the sea (in the shadow of the Ritz-Carlton, ironically enough). More

Bringing the Ocean to You
By Sarah Sung (Nov 18, 2004)
Chances are you've only driven past Café Maritime, zooming down Lombard en route to or from the Golden Gate Bridge, but locals know it well and word is spreading fast. Café Maritime's quirky locale should not diminish its appeal. More
