Thin Crusts in Glen Park

These days, every San Francisco neighborhood seems to have a boutique pizzeria. With Gialina, Glen Park has one of the best. Until a couple years ago, getting your teeth around a good Neapolitan-style pizza in the Bay Area required reservations at Zuni, A16, or Chez Panisse Café (or the patience to wait for a table at Pizzetta 211.) That changed in 2005, when Pizzeria Picco and Pizzeria Delfina opened. Each combined San Francisco's obsession with sourcing perfect ingredients with an artisan's attention to technique. The result: traditional Neapolitan-style pies with local ingredients, and the beginning of a new trend. More

SF Outpost Gets a B-Minus, Oakland Spot Scores Higher

While YBCA, MOMA, and the Metreon offer much in terms of arts and entertainment, dining options in the area are limited to just-palatable mall food (e.g. Buckhorn Grill, Chevy's, Jillian's) and super high-end fine dining (Ame, XYZ). B Restaurant and Bar strives to provide an upscale middle ground. Located just outside of the main building and on the second level of San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens, B occupies an ideal spot overlooking much of the downtown skyline with extensive patio seating. It may be a little confusing to find, but the views, especially on an unusual warm day in the city, make the search worthwhile. More

Spoon + Fork = Spork

Funny how the word “spork” makes one think about places like, say, KFC -- bucket meals, plastic utensils and fast-food. But put those thoughts out of your mind -- despite their digs in the former home of a KFC, there’s nothing pre-packaged about Spork except its name. The atmosphere is sleek and quirky, with a keen attention to detail throughout, including large modern paintings of fingers, and a sleek bar with seating reminiscent of that found at a coffee shop, only cool, modern and in slate grey and chrome. More

For anyone who's enjoyed grilled meats prepared in the Argentine fashion, a trip to an Argentine steakhouse is rife with anticipation. Will they have the gargantuan, grilled cross-cut short ribs that seem to be attainable only in South American restaurants? How are the empanadas, sweetbreads, blood sausages and chorizo? I’m always happy to crouch on a rickety stool with a paper plate on my lap if the food is good enough to merit the potential for grease stains on my knees. Take me to that Chinatown back alley with the awesome grub and trash bags for tablecloths any day; it's far preferential to the overblown, posh eatery serving paste on fine china and watery gruel in top-tier Swarovski. Pacific Catch may use real crockery instead of paper plates, but a food-first approach makes for long waits at this always-crowded Marina beehive. More
