Resilience by Design: Post-Disaster Innovations from Asia

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Asia Society Northern California Bechtel Conference Center (see times)
Hands-on, practical architecture and product designs that have emerged in the wake of natural disasters have proven effective at providing temporary shelter and solutions to disruptions in public services, especially in developing countries. These on-the-ground solutions are helping displaced communities “build back better.” How are Asia’s cities, especially the poorest communities, rebuilding after being impacted by natural disasters and various devastations, such as in the Phillippines one year after Typhoon Haiyan? With climate change projected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, what are some of the urban design lessons to be learned from around the world and how are they driving a new industry of resilient and replicable DIY architecture and products

Join ASNC as we bring together experts for a look at some of the most innovative concepts taking place today in resilient architecture and design. The event will also feature selections from a United Nations photo exhibition, Resilience by Design, which showcases some of the best resilient DIY designs from across the world.

Speakers:

Mary Comerio (moderator), Professor of the Graduate School, Department of Architecture, College of Environmental Design, University of California Berkeley

Patrick Condon, Chair, Urban Design Center, and Professor of Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of British Columbia

Illac Diaz, Founder, Liter of Light and My Shelter Foundation

Hiromi Tabei, Program Coordinator, Architecture for Humanity
