Rent Romus’ Life’s Blood

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Edgetone Records will release Truth Teller by Rent Romus’ Life’s Blood on August 30th, the first recording by the band in 12 years. To celebrate the release, Life’s Blood will perform at the Oakland’s newest restaurant and nightspot, Duende, at 9:00pm on Wednesday, September 25.

Life's Blood explores the influences and inspirations that make the art of jazz and improvisation timeless. The ensemble pays tribute as well as brings to light, reinvents, deconstructs, and breathes life into the deeper realms of their collective body of memory. Initially created by Romus while on tour in Northern Europe in 1999, the group currently features bassists Kim Cass, Markus Hunt and drummer/percussionist Timothy Orr.

Truth Teller features trio and quartet performances of original jazz from saxophonist, composer and producer Rent Romus, as well as inspiration from luminaries such as Albert Ayler, Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Jean Sibelius. At Duende, the quartet will perform selections from Truth Teller with a heavy dose of free improvisation. KFJC’s Thurston Hunger said of Romus, “Rent remains a force for me, his restraint as powerful as his melodic attacks." For more information about Rent Romus, visit https://www.romus.net.

Edgetone Records, founded by Romus, has been described as “a fiercely independent label" by Avant News. The label took shape in 1991 to support Romus’ original jazz recordings. Rent re-opened Edgetone in 2000 and expanded it to support avant-garde and experimental music and recordings crossing the genre boundaries specifically for D.I.Y. (do it yourself) artists looking for a ground base and community label identity. Now with over 135 releases, Edgetone is dedicated to a symbiotic relationship between artist and itself by releasing recordings by artists who are “self-producers”, show a clear proactive interest in working in a community environment with empowerment as the base, a mind for business, and not just looking for the “deal”. Edgetone does not just "put out" records, it supports artists. For more information, visit https://www.edgetonerecords.com

Duende is collaboration between Chef Paul Canales and impresario Rocco Somazzi, “a favorite already in the Oakland's Uptown dining scene” according to the Oakland Tribune, is located at 468 19th Street in Oakland, around the corner from the Fox Theater and 1.5 blocks from the Paramount in the burgeoning Uptown District. Duende was born from a common passion for creative soulful food, artisanal wines, beers and spirits and eclectic improvised music and art.

About the Musicians:
Rent Romus “swings like death and hell” according to the late Danish writer and producer Jack Lind. Born in the great north of upper Michigan and growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Romus' work on the saxophone has been dubbed “ferocious” by the San Francisco Weekly and “central to the creative music world of the West Coast” by writer jazz critic Frank Rubolino. He has recorded exploring improvisation and composition in a wide variety of musical settings on over 35 albums both as a leader and sideman which have included Chico Freeman, John Tchiai, Vinny Golia, Thollem McDonas, Stefan Pasborg, Dave Mihaly, James Zitro, Kash Killion, Jon Bridsong, Jim Ryan, and Ernesto Diaz-Infante.

Timothy Orr studied drums with Edward Blackwell from 1985-89 at Wesleyan University. He has worked for various record labels including Virgin, MCA, and Arkadia Jazz; was Associate Director of the Brubeck Institute at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California; and for the last seven years, he has worked for the Monterey Jazz Festival. Timothy has played with musicians in many fields, including Josh Roseman, Stephen Schwartz, Marco Eneidi, Richard Hell, Adam Lane, Tony Malaby, and many more. Timothy has also worked in many roots bands in the Bay Area since 1992, such as Kenny Menard, Motordude, Tete Rouge, Andre Thierry, Andrew Carriere, the Royal Deuces, and many more.

Kim Cass is one of the most promising jazz bass players to come out of the New England Conservatory in recent memory, possessing both a remarkably individual sound and a personal and virtuosic technique. As a freelancer in New York City he played with Bill McHenry, George Garzone, Andrew D'Angelo and Ethan Iverson among others. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2009 Kim has been a first call jazz bassist as well as a leading force in the creative scene—notably for the group Anteater, a trio with Ospovat and alto saxophonist Jacob Zimmerman.

Markus Hunt began his study of double bass at Howard University under Chris Sloniger, and later with Chuck Sher, Glenn Richman (Bobby Hutcherson) and Clarence Stephens (Church of Coltrane). Borrowing from 20th century European classical and American avant-garde jazz forms, his approach is both spiritual and intellectual. Over the past 20 years, he has shared the stage with such dynamic musicians as William Knowles, Lawrence Wheatley, Maritri, Eric Marshall, Rent Romus, Thollem McDonas, Timothy Orr, Philip Everett, Jesse Canterbury, and Joshua Allen's Deconstruction Orchestra. Additionally, and in collaboration with conductor/pianist David Leighton, he has directed two operas for Operaworks (NYC), namely The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Thea Musgrave) and Philomel (Milton Babbitt).
