Red Codexes/ Codices Rojos: Works on Paper by Calixto Robles
Calixto Robles, born in Oaxaca, Mexico, is a print-maker, painter, and ceramic sculptor living in San Francisco. He creates works of art inspired by the myths, symbols, colors, and ancient traditions of Mesoamerica using the ancient pigment technique of grana cochinilla. Supernatural figures including angels, eagles, jaguars, horses, hearts and moons frequently appear in Robles' brilliant paintings, reflecting the influence of pre-Colombian imagery on his works.
