Reconstructed Abstractions of the Urban Experience

at Zener Schon Contemporary Art (see times)
MILL VALLEY, CA – “Reconstructed Abstractions of the Urban Experience”, a charged exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by two local Bay Area artists, neo-abstract expressionist Carly Ivan Garcia and Benito Rangel de Maria, will be on view at Zener Schon Contemporary Art from February 2nd to March 19th, 2016. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, February 2nd from 6–8pm.

“Reconstructed Abstractions of the Urban Experience” is a two-person show concerning itself with the craze of systematic and individual experiences within today’s social, political and economic landscape.

Launching his career both as a painter and a collage artist, the featured paintings by Carly Ivan Garcia, balance various elements including text and binary symbols with his neo-abstract expressionist style. Working from the subconscious, Garcia’s[1] paintings depict the contemporary experience through the eyes of an artist, mirroring the pace of our current daily dependence with technology in his paintings. Intentionally using beautiful bold colors to convey emotion, his line leads the viewer through intense compositions with fluidity, and at times with a whimsical temperament. While personal experiences of physical pain inform his previous works, this current series speaks of the idea of the continuum of the urban experience, not only in the Bay Area, but in any major urban center today.

This exhibit unveils Benito Rangel de Maria’s most recent work, Portrait Series, which explores the personal realm of the individual by visually deconstructing the individual from the inside out. Through color and form, Rangel de Maria unleashes primal energy with visually kinetic motion amongst a landscape of contemporary symbols. While the forms indicate the complex network of modern infrastructure and perhaps digital highways, the developed language of circles and X’s used throughout the related “Tribe” and “Blaze” series are met with the markings of the human hand seemingly seeking the true translation of the new visual constructions. In the subsequent Blaze Series, this examination delves a bit deeper, as it explores our utilization of markings as tools to navigate and guide our journey through the landscape of our environment. The Portrait Series embraces intimacy not only with the markings of past works, but also with found elements placing the individual with more specific contemporary contexts. Reconstructing elements from urban infrastructure is a reoccurring theme in the work of Rangel de Maria. Part of an on-going series launched in 2009, four delicate paper constructions entitled Microcosm Studies are an exploration of issues of immigration, containment, and borders. Rangel de Maria’s use of abstraction, found elements, and symbols are collectively inspired from the infrastructure of the urban landscape and allude to the potential for a hopeful, intangible reality to be realized.

About Carly Ivan Garcia
With deep roots in the New York Abstract Expressionist movement, Carly Ivan Garcia’s art developed in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area art scene. Garcia has created a system of symbols including spinning cubes, circles, and triangles. He uses consistent kinetic motions with his body in his brushwork as a non-tangible symbol within his visual language. Breaking ground in 2009, Garcia’s work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Los Angeles and Rome. His paintings have also been featured at Miami Basel in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 and at the 22nd International Art Fair in Istanbul in 2012. Garcia has received notable press coverage through White Hot Magazine, Warholian and Remezcla. In 2015, Zener Schon Contemporary Art invited Garcia to join their roster of gallery artist’s with their exhibition “From East to West: A Bi-Coastal Dialogue” and featured his work at the 2015 Art Market San Francisco.

About Benito Rangel de Maria
From a young age, Benito Rangel de Maria was set on a path that interwove disparate cultural and geographical boundaries. While he was born in Michoacán, Mexico in 1970, it was his early years in Chicago, studies in Paris and Madrid, and residency at The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice that ultimately influenced his outlook on the world. His work has been featured at the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. In February 2015, Rangel de Maria’s work was launched in a solo exhibition at and highlighted at the 2015 Art Market San Francisco by Zener Schon Contemporary Art.
