SPECIAL "BUY-ONE GET-ONE FREE" PERFORMANCES

Thursday, November 20 – 7:30pm
Sunday, November 23 – 3:00pm
(see "BUY-ONE GET-ONE FREE" link online or purchase at the door)

Professor Kathy Foley, who specializes in performance of Southeast Asian theater, directs a student cast in a production of segments of the epic poem Ramayana, the great adventure story that has spread across the world and fascinated humans for over two millennia. Master drummer Undang Sumarna and guest musicians will perform live gamelan music.

Combining performance elements from West Java and Bali and puppets from Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand, Foley and her students will focus on a number of Southeast Asian versions of the story, which originated in Hindu India.

One of the most important literary works of ancient India, Ramayana (Rama's Journey) has greatly influenced art and culture in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia and has been expressed through numerous different cultures and languages throughout South Asia. The Southeast Asian versions differ considerably from the Indian antecedents.

The production celebrates our local version of wayang theatre, a genre of Indonesian performance that combines music, dance, and storytelling.
