Public Service Broadcasting: Of course you expect bespectacled men with bow ties and tweed jackets when you imagine a band called Public Service Broadcasting. That's part of the deal, and this duo is banking on ensnaring the audience with a little mystery and a lot of talent. Who are these guys actually, we may never know, but they say they're from London and go by the names of J. Wilgoose Esq. and his companion Wrigglesworth. Using found sounds from some of history's best teaching moments, the duo stitch together electronic pop music that you can dance to --while also learning a little about things like Sputnik and the Russian-US race for space. It's a heady idea, but one that pays off when you realize you can't stop bouncing around to the well-crafted beats. You won't even notice that in lieu of traditional vocalists you get guest appearances from long dead news anchors raised from the grave by the British Film Institue. The band's debut, "Inform-Educate-Entertain," certainly lived up to its name -- and their new record "The Race For Space" should appeal to the US electronic music fans who also cling to the idea that we won that space race and showed the Russians what's what. Live, the band uses live drums, guitar, banjo, and an intense-looking electronics set up to deliver their record to the EDM intelligentsia. It's British humor mixed with history mixed with actually good electronic music.
