Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Taking history into their own hands, nine contemporary Indian artists mine the photographic traditions in India as a means to challenge outmoded narratives, share hidden stories, and make personal connections with the past. They draw on a diverse range of sources, from ethnographic photographs made at the height of the colonial era to hand-painted studio portraits and stills from Bollywood movies. Marking the US debut of several of the featured artists, this exhibition deepens our understanding of the legacy of colonialism and celebrates new and socially engaged modes of image-making in India. The exhibition will include works by Madhuban Mitra and Manas Bhattacharya, Nandan Ghiya, Gauri Gill, Jitish Kallat, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Pushpamala N., Raqs Media Collective, Vivan Sundaram, and Surekha. Postdate will be accompanied by a 160-page catalogue co-published with the University of California Press and will travel to the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, Kansas (September-December 2015).

Postdate was organized collaboratively by the San Jose Museum of Art and the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita State University, Kansas, and is made possible by the generous support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Kaushie Adiseshan and Anand Rajaraman, Tad Freese, Mike and Yvonne Nevens, Dipti and Rakesh Mathur, and the Asian Cultural Council, New York.
