MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery’s Kristen Olson will offer a “Paint the Garden†Workshop at Allied Arts Guild on May 4th from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. This one-day workshop costs $125 and includes a gourmet lunch at the Blue Garden Cafe. In addition, Kristen offers weekly art classes in Palo Alto and Menlo Park on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 P.M. More information on these and other classes, as well as how to register, is available at

Kristen teaches impressionist painting to beginning through advanced students. Her approach to teaching is gentle but structured, with a clear working method to help students gain the tools and understanding of how to interpret and express their personal vision of the landscape from life or photos. Students learn from painting demonstrations, as well as individual attention at their easels. While oil is Kristen’s primary medium, her workshops and classes are open to oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolor painters.
During the workshop, Kristen will teach students how to see and interpret the subject with an emphasis on loose, expressive and colorful brushwork. Concentration will be on landscape painting on location, strengthening composition, seeing and simplifying shapes, identifying value planes, capturing light, understanding color harmony, creating texture and developing personal expression.
Weekly classes take place primarily at Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park, but students will occasionally travel to other locations to paint. Classes will be held throughout the year at a price of $45/class.
Kristen, who recently moved to Palo Alto from Hawaii, is one of Portola Art Gallery’s newest members. She primarily paints landscapes in oil, and her collection includes scenes from the San Francisco Bay Area as well as Hawaii. Her paintings are a blend of impressionism and realism, yet she strives to capture the abstract patterns in nature.
Explains Kristen: “When I paint, I start with a subject that inspires me and then allow the painting to evolve as I work on it.  In finishing a painting, I concentrate on texture and on creating a work of art rather than an exacting portrait of the subject. This allows me to finish the paintings from my heart. The process of painting can develop a special connection to the world like no other.â€
