MENLO PARK, Calif. -- May 18, 2010 -- The Portola Art Gallery presents Stephen Woolery’s “California Dreaming” -- vibrant pastels inspired by the splendor and dramatic scenery of northern California’s beautiful coasts, rivers and mountains.
Stephen’s paintings include several seascape scenes from the beautiful coastal areas of Pescadero and the Rocky Point area south of Point Lobos. His painting “October on the McCloud” captures the unique beauty of the deep oak- and pine-studded canyons of the lower McCloud River, one of the most pristine river areas remaining in the western United States. Other paintings capture the solitude of winter in the mountains, with warm colored foliage accenting snowy scenery.
Growing up in Colorado, Stephen developed an enduring fascination with the incredible scenic beauty and the dramatic skies of the Rocky Mountains. He was inspired by his stepmother’s father -- a Russian immigrant and successful, self-taught plein air oil painter.
Like his grandfather, Stephen is a self-taught artist. He works primarily in the medium of soft pastel and dedicates himself to painting the incredible beauty of California, from the coast to the Sierras. He is especially drawn to seascapes, rivers and dramatic skies.
