MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Asian Fusion,” a collection of Chinese brush painting by Linda Salter. The exhibit features Salter’s recent exploration of Chinese art, with pieces mounted on scrolls as well as others framed in Western style.

Salter began her study of painting in Taiwan. After graduating from Oberlin College, she spent three years teaching in a Chinese university in Taiwan. While there, she studied Mandarin, calligraphy and Chinese brush painting. It was only after returning to the States that she tried her hand at Western style art.

After a career in community college administration, she devoted herself to art -- primarily pastel and oil painting. More recently, she has returned to her painting “roots” and has resumed her study of Chinese brush painting.

Explains Salter “It has been like reconnecting with an old and dear friend. I have especially treasured the tranquil meditative state I experience when I practice calligraphy or Chinese painting.”

Salter has exhibited and received awards at community and college art shows; she has also exhibited solo at Avenue 25 Gallery in San Mateo and Esalen Institute in Big Sur.

Salter spent more than three decades as an instructor and administrator in California colleges, serving as president of Skyline College in San Bruno and chancellor of West Valley-Mission Community College District in Santa Clara County. Since retiring as chancellor more than a decade ago, Linda has studied with a number of local and visiting artists. More information about her artwork is available online at https://www.lindasalter.com

A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 1:00 - 4:00 P.M.
