MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Recent Works,†oil paintings by Carolyn Jones of Menlo Park. The exhibit includes Jones' landscapes from her travels in California, Vermont and France.
Carolyn Jones is best known for her California landscapes, focusing on local mid-Peninsula scenes, including the Baylands, Pacific Coast and coastal mountains. She paints in oil, using brush, rag, fingers and palette knife, to capture an impression of the moment with changing scenery and weather conditions. Her paintings are energetic and playful.
She also enjoys the magic of transparent oil colors, which add mystery, mood and depth to her paintings. The transparent color is painted wet-into-wet, allowing the colors to mix in the painting. Highlights and the effect of skies and water are achieved by wiping selectively to smear or remove paint. When seen at a distance, the painting assembles itself in the mind of the viewer, through the effect of optical color mixing.
