What: In commemoration of Pilipino American History Month (PAHM), the University of San Francisco’s Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program will host a series of events throughout October, celebrating the history and culture of Pilipino Americans. This month-long programming is co-sponsored by Kasamahan, the on-campus Pilipino student organization. All events are free and open to the public.

A Keynote talk with Dr. Rick Baldoz and Dr. Shelley Lee of Oberlin College.

•Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – “Back to Balagtasan: From Poetry to Hip Hop”
The struggle; the expression; the art. Social critique in the form of poetry can be traced back to Pilipino social activists of the early 19th century. Come explore our heritage through hip-hop as we break it down through the very foundations of poetry and social change.

The Philippines is full of myths, legends and ghost stories. So is Latin America. Come get into the Halloween spirit with Kasamahan and Latinas Unidas in a discussion about the most mysterious parts of cultures!

About: One of the largest in the world, USF’s Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program (YPSP) offers over 20 courses each year on Pilipino society, culture, history, and politics. The program enhances the classroom experience with lectures by many recognized U.S., Philippine, and Pilipino-American scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. YPSP has funded USF student attendance at Philippine conferences, workshops, and sports events all over the U.S. It has helped develop USF library's holdings into one of the best contemporary Pilipiniana collections in San Francisco.
