For over five decades, Pete Escovedo's skillful timbale playing has guided numerous configurations of his bands in the Bay Area and beyond. Rooted solidly in the tradition of Afro-Caribbean music, Escovedo rose to prominence in the Latin-rock explosion of the late '60s and early '70s. Associated with Santana, Azteca, and other bands mixing rock, funk, and Afro-Cuban rhythms, Escovedo blazed his own path as no mere sideman. The proud father of a musically talented family (pop star/percussionist Sheila E. is his daughter), his sons Peter Michael and Juan Escovedo, also first-rate percussionists, join his orchestra on-stage.

I warrant that seeing Pete Escovedo free in the park is one of the essential San Jose experiences, like watching the Little Giants cream the Ports, like fighting a heatwave day with margaritas at Aqui, like watching the weird puppets gesticulating at you at Xmas time. This Pittsburg, CA-born legend, who rose to fame playing with Santana before going on to his own solo career, turned 75 last year, and recently got a small sampling of his musical clan - daughter Sheila E. and sons Juan and Peter Michael - together for an E Family album. There's no better way to wrap up this Music in the Park season. - Richard von Busack
