Paula Harris

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Paula Harris Stands out among the Bay Area's best as one of the most unique and funky blues bands to ever arise from Northern California. After bursting onto the scene in 2012 with recognition at the International Blues Challenge as one of the top three bands in the world, her debut album's horn sound was born from members of “Tower of Power” and heavily influenced by her love of Funk, Jazz, and Soul Blues. They received multiple blues and music award nods as well as international attention and airplay in 2013. Her world class band delivers deep, dirty, grooves that dares her audience not to move.

Their performances combine ingenious musicianship and complex arrangements with catchy hooks that are simple enough to allow anyone to enjoy. The rhythm section and horns dig deep into the sound of “East Bay Grease” mixed with a heaping dose of New Orleans “Swampyness” to create a modern and outside the box approach to Blues. Their fans say they have more fun doing it than should be legal. It's one of the dirtiest rhythm sections on the planet and the band's chemistry is off the charts. THIS is what the phrase “Cooking with Grease” is all about! Paula's immense range, power and control over her vocals kick the whole sound into overdrive.

Paula, a Native of South Carolina, is a classically trained vocalist. But with a style that is obviously influenced by the likes of Etta James, Diane Schuur, Gladys Knight, and Aretha Franklin- it was only natural for her to gravitate towards the genre’s of Blues, Jazz and Soul. While most vocalists who cross genres tend to choose songs that fall in the middle ground between them, Paula’s astonishing versatility allows her to sing the full spectrum of all three. This is the basis of her funky blues style.

“If Etta James fronted the Tower of Power- and they were a blues band- THAT is what Paula Harris sounds like!”

Her band, the “Beasts of Blues” and her Horn section “Big Ass Brass” are world-class and they put on a show that is as impressive as their sound. Featured in the band are Prolific horn players Mike Rinta, Tom Poole, & Tony Peebles who have worked with acts such as Sly & the Family Stone, Etta James, Boz Scaggs, Santana, Lenny Williams and More. 17 year veteran drummer with Little Richard- Derrick Martin, Keyboardist from the James brown Band- Simon Russell, and long-time Bay Area Bass musicians and session players Joey Fabian and Terry Hiatt on guitar and Bass complete the Rhythm Section.

They won the 2012 Battle of the Bands for the Golden Gate Blues Society and the San Francisco Bay Area, the 2012 Monterey Blues Festival’s Battle of the Bands, and finished in the top three worldwide in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge.( after receiving standing ovations at all stages of the competition!) They are also nominated for a Blues Music Award and a Blues Blast Music Award as “best new Artist” as well as a nomination for the “Sean Costello Rising Start Award” for 2013. This group is being touted as one of the hottest most original bands to hit the blues scene in years.
