Smaller Films Bask in the Spotlight

This year smaller films have rightfully earned their place on the nominations list. Out of the five films nominated for Best Picture arguably only two (Crash, Munich) were produced and directed by big Hollywood studios. The rest of the contenders were more quiet and unassuming and slipped into the mainstream via word-of-word (i.e. Brokeback Mountain). Out of the actors nominated for the Actor in a Leading Role award, only Joaquin Phoenix hailed from a big studio film, Walk the Line. The same could also be said for the Actress in a Leading Role category. While many of the films highlighted this year did not have success according to box office numbers, they gained success from critics and ardent filmgoers. And, finally, the Academy listened.
