Grand Opening of the America’s Cup Park – Free to the Public Daily
The day’s activities start at noon with a ribbon-cutting event at the Park’s entrance. The Park is a vibrant landmark on the city’s waterfront offering a range of activities throughout the Summer of Racing for San Francisco natives and visitors alike. The Park offers something for the entire family to share in the America’s Cup experience with interactive exhibits, a cinema that simulates an onboard racing experiences, live entertainment and race viewing events. A range of food is available throughout the Park offering something for everyone from ice cream to a casual hot dog and cold beer to fine dining. The America’s Cup Park is open daily and is free to the public.
America’s Cup Opening Ceremony – July 4, 3:00 pm
The America’s Cup Pavilion, a 9,000-seat stadium located within the Park, is the setting for the Opening Ceremony, a ticketed event that takes place from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The ceremony features the crews of all four teams entered in the America’s Cup – defender ORACLE TEAM USA and challengers Artemis Racing, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge. The day’s program includes cultural performances and exhibitions from each of the four nations, the United States, Sweden, New Zealand and Italy. This celebration of the Summer of Racing is a fun and entertaining way for the entire family to experience the America’s Cup first hand.
Tickets are available now online at https://www.americascup.com and starting Monday, July 1, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the America’s Cup Pavilion Box Office on the Embarcadero. Of the $10 ticket price, $9 is being donated to help support the Healthy Ocean Project.
America’s Cup Park Highlights
Flying on Water – A unique interactive experience where fans can learn about the physics and principles of sailing as well as the America’s Cup and the technology behind the AC72, the wing sail, hydrofoiling catamaran that is the featured yacht in the 2013 America’s Cup.
Features include a wind tunnel and an eight-foot section of an AC72 wing sail. A fan activates when you place your hand in the wind tunnel, and you’re able to trim the wing with your hand.
At the projection wall, fans can interact via a track ball with a 14-foot three-dimensional model of an AC72. Rotate the model by rotating the track ball and zoom in on certain sections of the model and factoids pop up.
A hydrofoiling experiment allows fans to press down on a mini daggerboard, which activates a projection of an AC72. The catamaran starts to jibe when you push on the daggerboard; lift it up and the boat starts to fly.
The materials wall showcases various components of an AC72 and objects from the America’s Cup. The wall highlights composite materials such as carbon-fiber and honeycomb cores, which are sandwiched together to create many of the structures of an AC72. Visitors can see up close parts of a wing, daggerboard and grinding pedestal. The safety equipment used by the sailors is also featured.
Kids’ Zone – Kids and parents alike will enjoy the four exhibits inside the Pier 29 shed (next to the Flying on Water exhibit): the bouncy inflatable platform creates the sensation of being on the AC72 trampoline and simulates the Cup racing boat’s movement; a sail hoist grinding challenge; life size cut outs of the sailors for picture opportunities; and a wall that integrates five different screens with various images of racing on San Francisco Bay.
