In Oliver!, Lionel Bart's stage adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, the eponymous character's quest for a better life brings him face-to-face with the outright ugliness of Victorian England, where he endures squalid orphanages, child labor and joins up with gang of young pickpockets. It's dark subject matter, to be sure. However, the musical was also the impetus for the creation of some of Bart's most recognizable and celebrated showtunes. The Morgan Hill-based South Valley Civic Theater closes out its 2013-14 season with a production starring the young Tegan Leong in the titular role. (JD)
