Midnites for Maniacs host Jesse Hawthorne Ficks brings his signature series of overlooked or forgotten films to the Exploratorium this August, just in time for school. This triple feature of educational family dramas and cautionary tales are presented in their original 16mm formats.
Featuring:
Cipher in the Snow (1973, 21 min., 16mm) by Keith J. Atkinson
Hailed as the Citizen Kane of educational films, this Brigham Young University-made short revolves around a lonely young boy that everyone ignores at school, home, and even on the bus. Prepare to be truly traumatized by this moving experience that will change the way you see the world. Original 16mm print.
Stoned (1980, 46 min., 16mm) by John Herzfeld
Scott Baio shines in this exploration of high school marijuana use and its unintended consequences. You’ll be surprised at how thoughtfully modern the whole thing plays out. Watch the complete, unedited version of this holy grail of ABC Afterschool Specials from an original 16mm print.
Peege (1972, 28 min., 16mm) by Randal Klieser (Grease)
“Your laugh would always make me happy,” the young man whispers to his aged grandmother. This poignant film portrays a family’s annual Christmas visit to their grandmother, a patient in a small nursing home, as each family member wrestles with their own sense of despair, isolation, and difficulties with sincere communication. Prepare to shed tears.
Peege was included as part of the National Film Registry in 2007 and is being presented as an extremely rare print!
Jesse Hawthorne Ficks teaches Film History at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and curates/hosts the Midnites for Maniacs series at the Castro Movie Theatre. He also writes film festival reviews for many Bay Area outlets.
Included with museum admission.
