SEE EVENT DETAILS
*OBJECT HEAVY* featuring FRED WESLEY RAASHAN AHMAD FARNELL NEWTON and CHRISTOPHER BOA

Fred Wesley Legendary bandleader, trombonist and author Fred Wesley is one of the forefathers of funk who still is setting the standard with his jazz-funk band The New JBs. Together for more than 20 years, the band is a living celebration of roots funk and more, performing such hits as “Pass the Peas” made with James Brown and the JBs including Maceo Parker, as well as selections from the P-Funk years and Fred’s own and others’ soulful jazz and blues compositions. Fred’s critically acclaimed memoir “Hit Me, Fred: Recollections of a Side Man” (Duke University Press, 2002) chronicles through hilarious stories a half century of music through the eyes of one of the world’s most-sampled musicians. Born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in Mobile, Ala., Fred began his career as a teenage trombonist with Ike and Tina Turner. He later was music director, arranger, trombonist and a primary composer for Brown from 1968-1975, then arranged for and played with Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band. With Brown, Fred became “the world’s most famous sideman, orchestrating the sinuous grooves and contributing the bold, surgically precise solos that defined the language of funk.” He helped take funk to the next level with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Fred has recorded a dozen solo albums including the cult favorite “House Party,” is featured in the Oscar-winning documentary “When We Were Kings” and countless other documentaries and books about the funk, and gives master classes around the world. Object Heavy Object Heavy draws from the sound of soul music. Inspired by the parameters of Rock, Funk, Blues, R&B and Hip Hop, the band features Two voices which really capture their versatility with lyrics, reminding us of a world in need, a world to love and a place to be free. Their self-titled 1st album features Bill Summers, percussionist of the acclaimed HeadHunters. DJ Logic shows up on two tracks, and you’ll get to hear the Legendary Fred Wesley with his signature trombone. Sleep and Zone(Macklemore) of The Chicharones and Raashan Ahmad of the Crown City Rockers are featured, showing Object Heavy’s love for Hip Hop. Bay Area based rapper. Raashan Ahmad is originally from Pasadena, and has been on the grind since his first release as one of the lead M.C.s in the Boston formed group Mission, who released a self titled album in 1999. He’s also the front man for the live San Francisco hip-hop group Crown City Rockers who released the album Earthtones in 2004. Featuring the O so Heavy Horns, Farnell Newton and Christopher Boa this Object Heavy will be extra funky. Farnell Newton is one of the most versatile musicians & educators in the Northwest, playing trumpet and straight ahead jazz, smooth jazz, Latin music, soul, hip hop, funk and more. When he is not teaching at Portland State University’s Jazz Department or working with his youth jazz group, PDX Jazz Project, he is touring, recording, and sharing the stage with Skerik, Lettuce, Slightly Stoopid, Karl Denson, Galactic, Nigel Hall, sax man Mike Phillips , the DooDooFunk All-Stars, & many more. Christopher Boa from Oakland CA is a man on a mission playing all over the bay area in various funk and afrobeat projects as well as producing his own electronic music. You can catch him at his Boom Boom Room Residency every 4th Wednesday of the month!
