The inaugural Oakland Book Festival (OBF) features novelists, poets, historians, philosophers, journalists, editors, activists, and memoirists. In City Hall, 40 sessions with 90 writers will engage event goers in panels, interviews, and open debate. The event features national literary luminaries Edwidge Danticat, Hector Tobar, Tracy K. Smith, Paul Beatty, and Astra Taylor. Participating Bay Area writers include Rick Prelinger, Elaine Brown, Vikram Chandra, Ben Fong-Torres, Mark Danner, and Anthony Marra. A full list of activities and speakers can be found at
https://www.oaklandbookfestival.org. Join us for conversations about gentrification, multi-culturalism, whistleblowing, city life, and the future of American literature.
The outdoor portion of the festival, on Frank Ogawa Plaza, includes a dedicated children’s area with performances from Children’s Fairyland, “favorite-stories” read by librarians from the Oakland Public Library, and book-making projects courtesy of the Museum of Children’s Art. Live music includes performances by students from the Oakland Youth Choir and Oakland School of the Arts. Booksellers, magazine publishers and local literary organizations will have booths on the plaza; food trucks will provide nourishment.
Attendees will find easy access to the event via public transportation at the 12th Street/City Center BART station and AC Transit lines at the 14th Street/Broadway stops. Ample parking is provided free on city streets and in nearby parking lots.
