DE LA SOUL
In 1987, a trio known as De La Soul formed from Long Island, NY roots and changed the landscape of hip-hop as we knew it. Now, for over 20 years they have rocked us with their De La songs full of inscrutable samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid back rhymes. They have gained respect within and outside the hip hop community with their contributions to rap, as well as jazz, funk, soul and alternative genres. Not only are their musical innovations acclaimed and respected worldwide, but they paved a path for many alternative rap groups to come after them.

ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD (OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST)

DJ/Producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad is known around the world as one-third of the legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, but he began his musical career in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York. It was there that his uncle, Michael Jones, a bass player and DJ himself, pulled aside 8-year-old Ali and began teaching him music. Ali then spent years DJ-ing parties in his Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and recorded a slew of demos before co-founding Tribe in 1985 with Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Jarobi. He was just 19 when the group released its first album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, in 1990. Four more albums followed and the group’s place in hip hop’s pantheon had been secured.
Tribe disbanded in 1998, but Ali never let up. His production company has worked with Faith Evans, Mos Def and D’Angelo among others. As an A&R, Ali has scouted countless acts over the years including the Black Eyed Peas, The Neptunes and many more. Ali’s solo productions started in 2004 with the release of Shaheedulah and Stereotypes, which included collaborations with Phife Dawg, De La Soul and more. Ali has continued to produce and DJ since, most recently scoring Marvel’s Luke Cage.

DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN

Hailing from Oakland, California, Del and his crew, the Hieroglyphics came out as a markedly non-gangster response to a burgeoning West Coast scene. 20 years, a few world tours, collaborations & side projects, and countless releases later; Del has secured his place in hip hop's heart & soul.
