Description
Alphonse Berber Gallery is pleased to announce its new group exhibition, Not as a God, but as a God Might Be, opening July 31 at 6 pm, and running through August 29. The show presents the work of eight artists whose concerns, as diverse as their origins, include religion, the environment, racism, pop culture, television, and personal
mythology. What their work shares is a playful audacity of conception, form, and material. One sees this, for example, in the zany pipe-cleaner sculptures of Don Porcella, whose subject matter ranges from bathers in a pool to a beheaded and disemboweled figure surrounded by snack foods. Similarly, the sculptural installation of Christina Empedocles blends the fanciful and serious in a dismembered and reassembled tree replete with colorful acrylic Grackle birds. Not as a God, but as a God Might Be, like the Wallace Stevens poem from which the title is taken, boldly announces itself as a vigorous departure from previous ways of looking at the world– in this case, from that which is easily recognizable as "museum art", and from art that is conscientiously "anti-establishment" but is nonetheless embraced by the establishment because of that very fact. Each artist substitutes his or her own obsession in the place where religious themes had been found in the Old Master paintings. Not as a God, but as a God Might Be opens July 31 and runs through August 29. Alphonse Berber Gallery is located at 2546 Bancroft Way in Berkeley.
