Nine Inch Nails didn't invent industrial music, but they were definitely the band to bring it to MTV and into the mainstream. Trent Reznor's project became an underground sensation with 1989's Pretty Hate Machine, and then a household name with 1994's The Downward Spiral. Nine Inch Nails hit a nerve with angst-ridden kids all over the world with his dark, angry, nihilistic anthems like "Closer" and "Hurt," before taking a three-year break in 2009. Nine Inch Nails continue to tour behind 2013's Hesitation Marks, their first record in five years. Now married, sober and in his 40s, Reznor's music is less pissed-off than it used to be, but it's just as brooding and existential as ever. (Aaron Carnes)
