Mumbai-born artist Nilima Kumar paints in the tradition of Madhubani--an ancient technique practiced by the people of Mithila region of the Bihar state of India. The highly detailed and colorful style often features hypnotic geometric patterns paired with scenes of special occasions. Traditionally, artists create Madhubani paintings by manipulating natural dyes with fingers, twigs, brushes and matchsticks. Kumar blends facets of the Madhubani style with modern motifs--giving a fresh spin to the ancient tradition. The artist will be displaying some of her work at Chromatic Coffee for the cafe's First Thursday art series.
