The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble (LCCE) presents Nikki Einfeld + Left Coast, the final concert of the 2015-2016 season, featuring acclaimed Bay Area lyric coloratura soprano Nikki Einfeld. Aptly described in The New York Times as “…dazzling…” and praised for her“…melting beauty and purity of tone…" Einfeld will also be remembered by area audiences for her leading role in LCCE’s recent production of Death with Interruptions (March 2015) and her appearances with West Edge Opera and the San Francisco Symphony and Opera.
In this concert, Left Coast musicians Jerome Simas (clarinet) and Eric Zivian (piano) join Einfeld to perform Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, along with Strauss’s Ophelia’s Songs and works by Poulenc and Ives. As a complement to the vocal pieces, Simas and Zivian will perform Hindemith’s Clarinet Sonata.
Franz Shubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, written for soprano, clarinet, and piano, is a challenging vocal showpiece requiring emotional range. Einfeld is delighted to take on the challenge, describing the piece as “showing the all-encompassing beauty, and power of love to heal and protect.” The concert continues to test Einfeld’s expressive vocal talent with the dramatic triptych of Ophelia’s Songs by Richard Strauss. “These three pieces are presented in an almost operatic manner, as they would have been presented in the original Shakespearian play Hamlet,” explains Einfled. “Through the writing you understand motive, heartbreak, unpredictability and impending death as her madness concludes.”
“This concert celebrates our collaboration with a wonderful musician,” said Anna Presler, LCCE artistic director. “We are thrilled to be working with Nikki again and to be able to present a program that highlights her striking voice and expressive range.”
