The New Soul Era (NSE), continues to be one of the hottest and most innovative music sources in the Bay Area. The group consists of a collective of artists, all of whom are in High School and who have been playing and creating music virtually their entire lives. The three core members of the collective are from Berkeley, Ca and formed their first band 5 years ago. The trio grew up together, making music as early as 4th grade. Their sound is influenced by artists like Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, The Roots, Frank Ocean, Odd Future, Gnarls Barkley, Lauryn Hill, Spoon, Clams Casino as well as many other varied and diverse acts. NSE’s style is reflective of their eclectic musical tastes.
The group was founded by Dante Ryan and Jackson Kinder. The two formed the group, previously known as The Newcomers, in 7th grade. The duo’s first released song was a mash-up of Jay Z’s “99 Problems”, and Yael Naim’s “New Soul”, which literally achieved almost 2 million views on YouTube. It has been ranked as one of the top ten mash-ups of all time, by multiple blogs. The duo went on to release their first album some weeks later, and added the third core member, David Marcus, to the group. Once the core was established, the accomplishments continued. After the huge success of the mashup, and local success of the album, the group went on to perform at some of the Bay Area’s hottest venues such as Slim’s, The New Parish, Sweetwater Music Hall, and Yoshi’s Oakland. During this time the group released a second successful album, and is currently preparing for the release of their 3rd and most anticipated EP.
Founder Jackson Kinder, (stage name Charlie Nutrivore), is the group’s resident maestro as the lead producer, composer, arranger, engineer and pianist. Jackson has co-written every song the group has ever released. He was raised listening to Jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis.
Co-founder, Dante Ryan, (stage name Dante), is the group’s lead vocalist, and co-producer/ co-songwriter. He has been singing and performing since he was in 3rd grade. He has an intense love for Hip Hop, Soul and R&B, as well as many other musical genres.
David Marcus was added to the group as the group’s lead guitarist and background singer. David has been playing guitar since he was in 5th grade and his style is influenced by Jazz, Funk, Rock and Hip Hop. David also composes and co-produces many of the group’s tracks.
It has been 3 years since the group last played at Slim’s. Since that show, the group’s evolution has been striking. Both stylistically and from a performance perspective. This show will sell out so get your tickets early and come enjoy the iconic sounds of The New Soul Era.
