Twisted, Bent & Confused…in a Good Way
By Sarah-Jayne Couhault (Dec 21, 2007)
Kapakahi formed two years ago in the Mission District of San Francisco. And as one band member noted, "you can hear a lot of SF in our playing. The music scene in San Francisco really lets new and different music thrive. We are also doing a lot more hip hop, which is huge in the Bay Area. I really think that SF is one of the only places that you could find the mixture of musicians and attitudes that it takes to make Kapakahi a successful band." More

Released by Rough Traders, 12/04/07
By Sarah-Jayne Couhault (Dec 14, 2007)
Please forget the hype and just listen to the music -- this is what Geoff Travis and Jeanette Lee from Rough Traders said of The Libertines recently released "best of" album. Truer words have not been spoken. If you push Pete Doherty’s drug-induced, modelizing antics and media faux pas to the very back of your memory, the guy who looks like he has used up all of his nine lives puts on a stellar performance as Libertine front-man and proves that good British punk has a future. More

Released on International Hits, 1/22/08
By Grace Blasco (Dec 14, 2007)
On her MySpace page, Anna Kramer’s music (which is sometimes a solo project, sometimes a collaboration) is described as a “frayed jangle and twang meets country and rock and roll,” and it’s claimed she “struts a distinctive rock walk that transcends the singer/songwriter ghetto.” All of these claims are true, though they are somewhat misleading. Yes, the sounds are at once rustic and contemporary, but unfortunately, no freshness is brought to the table with the combination. More

SF Station Blows It Up
By Misha Vladimirskiy (Dec 14, 2007)
Live 105 sold out the Bill Graham Civic once again with a solid lineup of artists like Paramore, Spoon, Angels and Airwaves, Jimmy Eat World and Modest Mouse for their annual Not So Silent Night show last Friday night. Local favorites Maldroid opened the show with slick suits and electronic infused rock beats. The building shaking performance from Paramore, who from the first note had kids crowd surfing and freaking out, was one of the highlights as well as kick ass sets from Jimmy and Spoon. More

Resolve To See Live Music New Year's Eve
By Aaron Davidson (Dec 14, 2007)
Monday nights can be confusing times for musicians, torn between performing to yawning, working-class crowds or taking the night off to party while the rest of society turns in early. Thank the rock gods for New Year's Eve 2007, a Monday night where the day-jobbers join the rockers for a night of responsibility-free debauchery. To commemorate this unusual mingling of interests, venues across San Francisco host live music from across the globe. More

Telling it Like it is
By Matt Crawford (Dec 6, 2007)
For nearly 25 years William “Darondo” Pulliam remained a mystery to vinyl collectors and 70s soul and R&B enthusiasts. The Bay Area singer released three singles in the early 70s before abandoning the music scene and virtually disappearing, leaving only a few rare 45s -- which reportedly sell for hundreds of dollars -- and a mysterious persona. In addition to his music, and its nods to Al Green and The Isley Brothers, Darondo was known for sporting flashy clothes, spending money and driving his with 1965 Rolls Royce. Some thought he was a pimp, but the singer claims he was a legit businessman, enjoying the finer things in life. More

The Best Shows for December
By John Zaterka (Dec 4, 2007)
What a year it has been: the Stern Grove Series, which turned 70, treated us to a truly inspiring summer music line-up showing us a great time in the fog and sun; the solid eclectic lineup at the Treasure Island Music Festival gave Coachella a run for the money; M.I.A. came through more often then a friend with benefits; and we have jazz returning to the Fillmore District to give this district a much needed rebirth of cool. So monthly musical fix, I leave you my eclectic choice of six. More

Released on Invisible China Records and Bloodshot Ltd., 12/04/07
By Aaron Davidson (Nov 30, 2007)
Martin Atkins knows about drums. He drummed for Public Image Ltd., Ministry, Pigface, and many other industrial bands. Atkins' drums are played live and sampled, a technique that, when executed correctly, can sound like John Bonham's bionic spirit, back from the dead with a hard drive sharing space in his brain. Imagine the drums on Nine Inch Nail's "Closer". Atkins career revolves around that drum sound. More

Released by Drag City, 10/21/07
By Sarah-Jayne Couhault (Nov 29, 2007)
Have you ever listened to a vinyl spinning and then turned it off mid cycle? The sound gets slower and slower and, eventually, the record stops. When listening to White Magic’s second track “Very Late” featured on their new EP Dark Stars, this is what it sounded like. I felt like someone needed to turn up the tempo -- maybe it would have sounded better on fast forward. Particularly when esteemed crooner Mira Billotte’s somewhat screechy vocals and clever song writing seem to have more potential than the song allows. More

SF Station Blows It Up
By Misha Vladimirskiy (Nov 29, 2007)
Seattle's Band of Horses graced the stage at The Fillmore last Friday night for a very sold out show. With great opening sets by singer/songwriter Tyler Ramsey and Aussie’s The Drones (who sounded kind a like The Mars Volta meets Wolfmother) the boys of Band of Horses had their way set for a killer show. Performing songs from their new album Cease to Begin and even playing with an axe tambourine Ben made the crowd swoon. More
