SF Station Blows It Up
By Misha Vladimirskiy (May 9, 2008)
I guess white guys have the sarcastic rap game in hand and coming from the shadows of artists like Atmosphere and Sage Francis is Mac Lethal, and last Thursday night he brought it down at the Bottom of the Hill. With quirky flows and dope beats, Mac made me a fan; his nerdy stage persona was interesting but once his mouth was open you knew it was only a visual trick. More

The Best Shows for May
By John Zaterka (May 9, 2008)
The Bay Area’s own man-on-the-mic, the Original MC Radioactive, will be flipping the freestyle flows at the Juxtapose Art SF Now party. Club Six has always been one of my favorite venues; this night features hip hop, live performances in the dark room, and Jah-Yzer spinning the reggae vibes in the bassment. MC Radioactive is one of the Bay Area’s true gems -- he has rocked the mic with Spearhead’s Michael Franti (featured on the album Everyone Deserves Music) and I have seen him on-stage performing alongside everybody from the Greatful Dead’s Bob Weir and Galatic to Ben Harper and countless others. More

Released on Astralwerks, 4/15/08
By Sarah-Jayne Couhault (May 2, 2008)
I first came across The Kooks whilst traveling through Byron Bay on Australia’s East Coast in the back of a Combi Van. Whilst shopping for surf wax, I noticed a compilation album called Coastal Chill 2007. As "chill" was perhaps the best way to describe our location, and the eclectic crowd that had gathered for the annual blues and roots festival Blues Fest, I bought a copy -- and literally "fell in love at the seaside"…with The Kooks. More

Released on Matador Records, 4/6/08
By Aaron Davidson (May 2, 2008)
Remember the first time you put on goggles and sank to the bottom of the pool and watched what the water does to noise? The music of Matmos doesn’t sound too different from that. On its seventh album the electronic duo is at their weird, experimental best. They’re off the deep end, as it were. More

SF Station Blows It Up
By Misha Vladimirskiy (May 2, 2008)
There's nothing like roasting in the sun…well unless you're also listening to some good bands and watching some interesting people at Coachella. This year's Coachella Music and Arts Festival was really hip, with every kind of hipster band you could imagine from Justice to Cut Copy but also with some old favorites like The Verve, Portishead, Roger Waters and Prince gracing the stage. Overall, it was an interesting mix of new and old with some great highlights like Roger Waters performing the Darkside of the Moon in its entirety, Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip mix it up and The Raconteurs rocking the main stage. More

A "Natural Kind of Girl"
By Matt Crawford (May 2, 2008)
You don’t have to be a fan of oysters to enjoy San Francisco’s 9th Annual Oyster Fest that returns to the Great Meadow at Fort Mason on May 17th. Just ask Juliette Lewis, the actress turned rocker who performs during the two-day festival along with the Dropkick Murphys, She & Him and others. She can stomach cinematic ultra-violence (see: Natural Born Killers, Kalifornia), but apparently has a harder time with small sea creatures. Lewis spoke with SF Station during a phone interview from her home in Los Angeles near the end of a two-month break from her music and acting career. More

SF Station Blows It Up
By Misha Vladimirskiy (Apr 25, 2008)
Rilo Kiley returned to SF last Thursday night to droves of screaming fans and a beautiful light show at The Concourse. As always Jenny Lewis and the crew rocked the house with great tunes that made my feet stomp and my head rock from side to side. This was the second part of the tour promoting their new album Under the Blacklight, so we got to hear some great new tunes and some better classics. More

Making Lemonade
By Matt Crawford (Apr 24, 2008)
As one half of the Minneapolis hip hop duo Atmosphere, Slug helped define a new generation of underground hip hop that shifted the previously dominant East Coast/West Coast mindset born in California and New York with emotive lyrics that touch on lust, love, heartbreak and other common elements of everyday life. His terrestrial alternative to the rap super heroes -- or super egos -- that are shaped through mainstream avenues has helped fuel a spike in interest in the group. Atmosphere is scheduled to perform during a two-night stand May 8th and 9th at the Regency Grand Regency. More

Released on Cochon Records, 4/1/2008
By nora ballard (Apr 18, 2008)
Experimental Dental School lives up to its peculiar name. The trio certainly does experiment with all sorts of noise, sometimes seeming more interested in a thud and bang than a melody. In their latest album, Jane Doe Loves Me, the pop group explores sounds that are reminiscent
of everything from an old school Nintendo game to a Fellini film. More

Released on Mercury Records, 4/29/08
By VinCi Chan (Apr 18, 2008)
Portishead standardized trip-hop back in the 90s, and after roughly ten years they give us Third, their aptly named third major release. Their music definitively changed the way people listened to music, infiltrating "pop" and pop culture as we know it today. The Bristol-based trio has taken a distinctive new course with their Third apex. More
