On September 29th at 7pm St. Francis Lutheran Church in San Francisco will celebrate the Festival of St. Michael and All Angels with a fully sung candlelight choral liturgy. The mass will feature Lodovico Viadana's sixteenth century masterpiece, Missa L'Hora Passa. The pure lines of polyphonic texture woven together with the chanting of the lessons and prayers form such a wonderful varied and contemplative experience that St. Francis has called this event a Music Meditation Mass.
Renaissance choral music is performed regularly in the Bay Area, but the Music Meditation Mass at St. Francis is a rare opportunity to hear this music in the liturgical context for which it was composed. The architecture of St. Francis church with its altarpiece, pulpit and rising nave are a perfect setting for enjoying the beauty of this choral music while the traditions of the western rite are enacted. All are welcome at St. Francis.
Lodovico Grossi da Viadana (ca.1560-1627) was a Franciscan friar, composer and teacher who held various musical posts during his life, notably working in Rome and Mantua. His earlier works are in the “stile antico,” the unaccompanied polyphony of the Renaissance era, and the Missa L’Hora Passa is one of these. The choir will also sing a motet by Felice Anerio (1560-1614), a contemporary of Viadana.
