How can the arts catalyze social change? Spend an evening with Michael Franti, a ground-breaking activist-musician whose passion for justice has motivated an arts movement. The Pacific School of Religion's Music, Justice, and All Love: A Conversation with Michael Franti. The event will take place Friday, January 30th, at 7:30 PM at the First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St.
Oakland-born Franti founded bands The Beatnigs, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and Spearhead, playing punk, hip hop, and alternative rock. Throughout his artistic career, Franti has integrated social justice activism into his art. To raise awareness for incarcerated political activist Mumia Abu Jamal, Franti initiated Power to the Peaceful, a free concert series in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The concert series continued for a decade. In 2005, Franti directed the documentary film, I Know I'm Not Alone, which shows the human cost of American occupation in the Middle East. Franti was invited to headline President Obama's 2013 Peace Inauguration Ball, an international gala promoting international peace efforts.
Michael Franti will speak about integrating arts and social justice in his 20-year music, film, and public event career. He will close with a few songs. This event is open to the public. Tickets are $45 in advance or $55 at the door (taxes and fees apply).
