Originally conceived as “a work to be read, played, and danced,” Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale is a Faustian story of a brave soldier, a violin, and a deal with the devil, brought to life here by guest narrator, Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, Elvis Costello. The musical fable displays Stravinsky’s interest in dance music, brimming with tango, waltz, and ragtime. Capping off the program is John Adams’s controversial yet bright Grand Pianola Music.
