Ms. Direction: Kelly Reichardt's River of Grass + Live Jazz

SEE EVENT DETAILS
RIVER OF GRASS is the second screening in of our MS. DIRECTION series, a program dedicated to highlighting the work of female filmmakers, past and present, from around the world.
Lovingly resurrected by Oscilloscope Laboratories to create a new DCP, RIVER OF GRASS is Kelly Reichardt’s darkly funny debut feature, which brought the writer/director back to the setting of her adolescence, the suburban landscape of southern Florida, where she grew up with her detective father and narcotics agent mother. Shot on 16mm, the story follows the misadventures of disaffected house-wife “Cozy,” played by Lisa Bowman, and the aimless layabout “Lee,” played by up-and-comer Larry Fessenden, who also acted as a producer and the film’s editor. Described by Reichardt as “a road movie without the road, a love story without the love, and a crime story without the crime,” RIVER OF GRASS introduces viewers to a director already in command of her craft and defining her signature style.

To help discuss the work of Reichardt (OLD JOY, MEEK’S CUTOFF, WENDY AND LUCY), Bay Area Film Fatales will join Roxie’s Sam Fragoso for a panel afterward.

Given the film’s jazz infused score, it’s jazz drumming character, and Blue Note Records serving as a location for a vital scene, it just felt like a conspicuous omission if we did not offer up some live jazz by AC Lewis and company in the Little Roxie, after the conversation.

Admission to the jazz show is free if you RSVP to [email protected] by Thursday, April 7th. Showing your RIVER OF GRASS ticket stub also grants you access to the show.

For those who don’t RSVP or attend the screening, tickets will be $5.00 at the door.

Free mixed drinks, beer, and wine will be served during the jazz show!

This is event is co-presented by cléo and Alamo Drafthouse San Francisco.

(Directed by Kelly Reichardt, 1994, USA, 76 min.)
