An Afterschool Special on Tolerance
By Anhoni Patel (Sep 18, 2004)
Every single student at Whitwell Middle School in Whitwell, TN, a small town with only two traffic lights and a mere 100 miles away from where the Klu Klux Klan came into existence, is Christian. And only five are black. Which is why the principal wanted to create some kind of exercise that would teach her students about diversity. The assistant principal thought that teaching them about the Holocaust would do the trick.

What started off as a straightforward lesson in tolerance became a quest that changed a community. More

Sexed-up, Subversive Laughs
By Anhoni Patel (Sep 25, 2004)
The opening scenes of John Waters' latest and greatest film, A Dirty Shame, reveals an uptight, high-strung woman in need of rest and relaxation, and her amorous husband is more than willing to assist her in that area. But she adamantly refuses as it's not even noon, and only perverts do it in the light of day. You see, she's a 'neuter' and she'd be damned if she would succumb to any filthy carnal desires on her way to work. More

Political Pranksters Take on the WTO
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 2, 2004)
The newest documentary in the wave of political films being released in time for the Presidential Election, may be the funniest and most enjoyable. The Yes Men is about a group of impersonators / imposters / educators / activists that plays like an hour and half Candid Camera episode. The movie follows the antics of a group of political pranksters impersonating the illustrious WTO, after their spoof web site of the organization gets repeatedly mistaken for the real deal. More

Buckle-up for Safety, It's Going to be One Hell of a Ride
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 9, 2004)
Anyone that's been to NY knows that jumping into the backseat of a cab can sometimes be a death wish. No offense to cabbies, who navigate the city streets with all the zeal of NASCAR drivers, who at least can get you wherever you want on time. In director Tim Story's (Barbershop) latest movie Taxi, when the driver tells you to buckle up, she means it, and she can get you from midtown to JFK in nine minutes. More

The Countdown to Christmas begins with the refreshing and funny romantic comedy Love Actually that is, surprisingly, a joy to watch. Brought to you by Richard Curtis, the guy who produced and wrote other similar Brit comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones's Diary, it follows several slightly connected people all in the midst of different stages of love and relationships: a quirky aging rocker with a rapier wit, Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) and his chubby manager; a grieving widower (Liam Neeson) with possibly the cutest most earnest son on earth... More

Falling asleep in the theater
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 15, 2004)
Sometimes quiet sleeper movies are just that - they make you want to curl up and take a nice snooze. While the film Love Liza has its moments, it is by and large an unremarkable story plodding towards inevitable disaster. More

Don't let this sleeper hit pass you by
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 15, 2004)
Not every movie has a budget the size of Russia's economy. Most indie flicks quietly slip onto the screens of art houses all over the country and then slide off onto obscure video racks. Lovely & Amazing, directed by Nicole Holofcener, is one of these inconspicuous movies that you may not have heard of but should definitely go see. More

The 6th Annual Film Festival
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 15, 2004)
It's difficult to find a film festival that features an equal amount of women directors to those of men. Even more rare is a festival in which every director is female. Since 1996 the MadCat Women's International Film Festival has been allowing these filmmakers to break through the glass ceiling and shatter a long held status quo. This year's offerings vary from the insane to the poignant with tongue-in-cheek animation to lilting memoirs. Indeed, it is the animated shorts that steal the show. Below are some highlights: More

Hotel Love
By Anhoni Patel (Oct 15, 2004)
What is it about the Great American Dream, that story of a poor, down-and-out individual who rises to the top through hard-work and sheer determination, which gets translated over and over again on film? Moreover, why is it that women in these stories so frequently improve their lives through sleeping with rich and powerful men rather than attending night school, going to college and becoming megalomaniac capitalists themselves? More

Very Close to the Edge Indeed
By Anhoni Patel (Nov 11, 2004)
Dear diary, tonight I had to go see an annoying movie about an insufferable woman named Bridget Jones. Her sole goal in life was to land a man, thus setting back the woman's movement back a couple of decades in the process. The first movie was pretty good, but this sequel was bullocks. If I had to sit through one more bumbling stupid remark of hers, I would have been forced to take some drastic measures. I'm sure you know of what I speak… More
