HUSHconcerts proudly presents a special night for company co-founder Robbie Kowal (aka Motion Potion) celebrating twenty years behind the decks.
The night will feature a marathon 5-hour DJ set by MoPo running through the entire topical breadth of his musical career. Beginning with his true loves, funk, soul and disco, he will work through the dozens of styles he has played over the years, hip hop, breakbeat, house, reggae, and rock and all of the remix, mashup and reboots thereof. Pressed into service as replacement DJ for a Greek seaside nightclub in spring 1996, MoPo became the resident and played 150+ straight 5-hour nights, honing a genre-blind style to which he still adheres. Moving to San Francisco in 1997, his seminal WhatDaFunk party established him as one of the Bay Area’s leaders in the funk revival movement. Since then he has played literally every conceivable type of music in every conceivable scenario: opening for James Brown, closing for Metallica, jamming with Parliament Funkadelic. He forced the door for DJs at rock festivals, being the first to play over a dozen, while holding down multi-year residencies at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Gathering of the Vibes etc. His tireless work as co-founder of SunsetSF/HUSHconcerts has led to the presentation of more than 900 bands and DJs. On July 11, one of San Francisco’s most energetic advocates of emerging music as he takes us on a microcosmal journey of his unlikely career.
