Back by popular demand, this program takes you on an aural journey with the "movers and shakers" of jazz.
John Schott on John Schott
5:30-6:30 PM
Join Berkeley guitarist John Schott as he takes us on an aural journey of his musical lineage — from his early music training, courtesy of his parents and Seattle Public Schools, to the other mentors and mavericks who inspired him, including Gary Peacock, Julian Priester, Jerry Granelli, Jay Clayton, Ben Goldberg, Kenny Wollesen, and John Zorn. Through words and music, John and his long-time musical partner, bassist Dan Seamans, discuss and demonstrate “how all the voices in his head are actually a good thing.”
Rova Channeling Coltrane: Electric Ascension Live
7-9 PM
This program presents two films related to John Coltrane and his 1965 recording Ascension, which critic Gary Giddins once called, “the most vexatious piece of music in jazz history.” Famed for its monumental scale and raw emotional power Ascension has been re-incarnated by the Rova Saxophone Quartet as a conducted improvisation for a large ensemble of 12 innovative master musicians, recorded at the Guelph Jazz Festival in 2012. Rova Channeling Coltrane is a duet of films; a concert video of the epic Electric Ascension Live at the Guelph Jazz Festival (68 min.), preceded by Cleaning the Mirror, the documentary by John Rogers on the history and creative process behind the music and how Electric Ascension evolved from Coltrane’s masterwork (45 min.). Shot at jazz festivals in Paris; Saalfelden, Austria; and Philadelphia, the musicians speak about their inspiration, their approach to the music, and their connection to Coltrane.
Filmmaker John Rogers and members of the Rova Saxophone Quartet will be present for a Q&A after the screenings.
