Hilliard Architects presents “Meditations on Silk” by Ellen Brook
San Francisco, CA, February 21, 2014- Hilliard Architects is pleased to announce the unveiling of San Francisco Bay Area artist Ellen Brook’s most recent series of mixed media paintings “Meditations on Silk”. An opening night reception will be held Thursday March 6, 2014 from 5-7pm at Hilliard Architects in San Francisco’s Union Square District. The show runs March 6-May 2, 2014.
Brook’s contemporary paintings on silk explore the meditative experience of being in the moment. She is interested in how the act of presence reveals the sensual and poetic nature of our humanity, which is often hidden within the intensity of contemporary life. By pushing the boundaries of the ancient discipline of silk painting, Brook brings a modern sensibility to her work.
Her most current work explores the tension between one’s odyssey for something quieter and more contemplative and the opposing energy of the urban landscape. Bold geometric and vertical markings are at times layered with inkjet prints on silk to unfold the notion of an Urban Zen.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963, artist Ellen Brook found her way to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997. After calling many cities and towns ‘home’ and traveling extensively, she began her artistic journey in California. Her investigations into consciousness and meditation paralleled her introduction to painting. Ellen holds a B.A. from Duke University and an M.P.A. from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and is largely self-taught artistically. She has supplemented her self-education with painting, drawing and collage classes. Ellen resides and maintains her studio just south of San Francisco.
A percentage of the proceeds will go to Children’s Chess Programs at Mechanics Institute in San Francisco
