MEAT. 2015.
Matthew grew up in the American working-class – a paperboy, a butcher, and a U.S. Navy sailor. Through his experiences he became interested in the relationship between human and commodity, processes and labor. In the installation titled, MEAT. he is paying homage to his past trade as a butcher. He believes the artist’s studio and a butcher shop share multiple tangents: work ethic, labor, processes, and often the production of consumer goods. The conceptual motivation is the act of creating art objects in the same manner of creating (cutting) various meat cuts; this draws a parallel of the two different disciplines, a retail based trade and art making. MEAT. is an assembly of process art making, absurd and humorous, blending into a colorful display about big business retail, the loss of craft, and the resurgence of a craft in a new arena.
Matthew is a San Francisco based artist living and working in the Sunset District. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in North Beach and his MFA from the University of California Santa Barbara. He works primarily in process based paintings and material based sculpture. His process is based primarily from personal experiences, tattooing, graffiti, painting, drawing, loud music, three dimensional studies, lots of cooking, and everyday city living – somehow these all twirl around internally and art is the result.
